The timing belt service is one of the most important maintenance item you can do on your Subaru. All Subaru EJ-based engines from 1995 to present are interference motors. This causes severe internal damage to the engine if the timing belt failures when the engine is running.

A common failure on most Subaru non-turbo 2.5L engines is the head gaskets. Most owners will have them replaced before they fail and leave them stranded on the side of the road with an overheated engine. Most failures occur between 120,000 and 150,000 miles, though age and prior maintenance may accelerate or delay this figure.
